How do you fit years or decades into a piece of wood?

Turns out, you don’t.

That's lot to ask of a piece of wood.

It’s early mornings and late nights. Long hours on the line. Deployments and TDYs. Places you never expected to call home. Christmases spent somewhere unexpected. Bad coffee somehow made the best because of who you were with. Sacrifice and loss. Moving boxes. Inside jokes. A callsign nobody will explain. And at least one story everyone has heard forty-seven times.

Somewhere along the way, what started as a job became a pretty big piece of your life.

And the funny thing is, when it’s over, the official record will do a pretty good job of telling people what you accomplished.

It just won’t tell them most of what mattered.

It won’t tell them about the people who started as coworkers and somehow became family. The place you couldn’t wait to leave but somehow give just about anything to visit again. The unit that changed you. The good days. The hard days. The really hard days. Or the thousand little moments that wouldn’t mean much to anyone else—but mean everything to you.

Maybe that’s why we like working with wood.

Wood has a memory of its own. Every knot came from somewhere. Every line marks a season. Every piece carries the evidence of where it’s been. What it has been through.

People aren’t all that different.

We know we can’t fit an entire career into a piece of wood.

But we can try.

Because eventually everybody takes the uniform off.
